Turkish pomegranate season getting started

“We prepared our team and equipment for the hot weather in order to avoid negative result”

The pomegranate production for Islek Group is steadily increasing year on year. Last year, the company expected an increase of about 15 per cent. Mehmet Mutlu, export assistant for Turkish fresh produce exporter Islek Group, thinks that their pomegranate production will increase even more this current season: “This year we expect to increase our harvest volume 30 per cent. This means our total pomegranate production will be around 6,000 tons. We see that pomegranate demand will be very high in this season. We have new clients in Germany, Netherlands and Sweden -in the negotiation phase. Also current clients are asking for more volumes."

To stay ahead of both domestic and foreign competition, Islek works hard to increase the quality of their pomegranates every year, Mutlu explains: “We compete with Turkish producers for the export of pomegranates, but in these export markets we also compete with Spanish, Egyptian and Greek producers. We increase our products quality step by step, every year. By now our clients are aware of our quality, and choose to stick with us, which is the reason why we are successful in our business.”

The Turkish weather has been scorching hot in August. Mutlu states that as they knew the hot weather was coming, they’ve managed to avoid the negative effects at least partly: “We had and still have incredible hot weather this year. We saw all-time high temperature records in the last month. But when we realized in the weather forecasts that hot weather would be upon us all summer long, we prepared our team and equipment in our pomegranate production areas for this situation, and struggled in order to avoid a negative result.”

“We’ll be exhibiting during the Interfresh Eurasia exhibition in Antalya, Turkey. We want to expand our markets to Northern Europe and East Asia, and we also want to increase our total trade volume. We are sure that we are on the right path,” Multu concludes.

Islek Group is exhibiting together with Merpak and Soom during Interfresh Eurasia 2023. You can find their stand at 3.1-E.
