Harvesting has started in Puglia

Italia grapes finally doing better

Excellent start of the campaign for the grapes of the Italia variety grown in Puglia. Harvesting operations started in week 35 in the early cultivation areas of Trani, Bisceglie and Mola di Bari.

The positive start was already expected from the sales of other traditional seeded grapes, whose prices have so far been higher than those of seedless cultivars.

Yields are 30% lower due to the fungi caused by the rainy and humid weather in May/June, but it seems the drop is even higher for the Italia variety due to the uprooting that took place over the past year: this caused an unexpected drop in supply and thus an increase in prices.

Current Italia grapes quotations are €0.80-1.00/kg, while on the market they sell at around €2.00-2.50/kg. Prices are different than the same period of 2022, when entrepreneurs achieved €0.40/0.60 €/kg and wholesale operators managed €1.40-1.60/kg.

Producers are therefore pleased again, many remark that supply and demand are finally balanced. Productions are of excellent quality, with a distinct Muscat flavor and aroma typical of the variety, one of the main and most famous cultivars in the world that has always been considered the piece de resistance by Apulian producers.
