“We can export sweet plums to the EU tax-free”

Recently, the European Parliament extended trade liberalization measures between Moldova and the EU for another year. This gives European importers the opportunity to buy fruits from Moldova tax-free. ”Moldovan fruit growers are ready to deliver high quality plums of large caliber to buyers from all over the world”, says Iurie Fala, CEO of the Fruit Producers and Exporters Association ”Moldova Fruct”.

Moldovan fruit producers report a good plum harvest this year. There are currently 19.000 hectares of plums under cultivation in Moldova, with an average annual production of 100.000 tons. Moldovan plums are available from July to November.

“Customers enjoy our plums for their flavor and sweetness, particularly the Kabardinka, Stanley, and President varieties, which are the leading varieties grown for export. Our top-notch production and post-harvest facilities will surprise the buyers. The leading fruit growers in Moldova are GLOBALG.A.P./GRASP and certified via other international standards. As a result, our plums are conquering new markets every year,” Fala states.

According to Fala, last year, Moldovan plums were exported in 24 countries, such as Romania, Poland, Germany, Netherlands, Austria, Czech Republic, Croatia and other countries. “The German buyers appreciate the quality of the fruits delivered from Moldova and every year they tend to import more fruits from the Republic of Moldova. Moldovan plums are in high demand both in Eastern and Western markets and are second-most exported fruit from Moldova. The country ranks among the top 5 fresh plum exporters in the world.”

"We have 18 hectares of plum orchards and we expect to harvest about 300 tons of plums of several varieties: August delight, Bluemont, Empreso, Stanley, President. The fruits can be delivered in wide range of packaging, according to buyer’s request, including traditional carton boxes of diverse size, punnets” says Liubomir Vaipan, manager of Fratii Vaipan LTD, member of Fruit Producers and Exporters Association of Moldova.
