AILIMPO expects 30% more Fino lemons than in the 2022/23 campaign

Spain's Fino lemon production has gone back to the levels of the 2020/21 campaign

AILIMPO's first Fino lemon production estimate for the 2023/2024 season points to it reaching 990,000 tons.

This entails a significant 30% increase compared to the production of this same variety in the 2022/2023 campaign, and a return to the levels reached in the 2020/2021 campaign, when the Fino lemon production already reached 980,000 tons.

This first harvest estimate will be confirmed at the end of September and will depend on the development of the weather conditions, the water supply and the impact on the harvest volume of the entry into production of new plantations, since the Fino lemon acreage has expanded by 5,671 hectares over the last 6 years, from 25,609 hectares in 2017 to the current 31,280 (+22%), according to official MAPA data.

Spain will continue to be the world's leading exporter of fresh lemons in the 2023/2024 season, and the second largest processor of lemons intended for the production of juice, essential oil and dehydrated peel.

Hail damage
Plenty of rainfall was recorded last May and this generally had a positive impact on the development of the crop, although there was also occasionally hail and it is estimated that about 1,000 hectares could have been affected by this weather phenomenon in various parts of the Region of Murcia. The most significant damage was reported in Campo de Cartagena, Alhama or Vega Media del Segura (Archena and Molina de Segura).

Upcoming updates
Ailimpo will update the harvest estimate again on:

  • Thursday, September 28, 2023.
  • Thursday, January 25, 2024.
