Australia offers citrus supply to U.S. during counter season

As the counter season for Citrus in the U.S. is underway, the demand for Southern Hemisphere citrus is high. Latin America and South Africa have been the go-to sources for citrus for the US market but Australia should also be a consideration says Bernadette Archibald from Austrade.

There will be a significant uplift of citrus in the market this year as more US retailers and importers diversify supply in the season to include sourcing from Australia.

Australia is a predictable producer of premium citrus with a long season. National growing means almost year-round supply. Navels are in high supply now through to November and mandarins from now through October.

Consumers are demanding healthy, safe product as well as premium taste. Australia has among the highest biosecurity stance globally ensuring the Australian industry produces a reliable and safe supply for both domestic and international markets. Australia has advanced agriculture farming techniques. Australia’s sustainability investment means the environmental impact is minimized because of Australia’s water management practices and reduced use of pesticides and herbicides.

Most importantly American consumers can look forward to sweet tasting, juicy oranges and mandarins due to the higher Brix level consistently delivered in Australian citrus. The season has commenced and growers are working hard to deliver fruit for the US market.

Australian orange producers grow predominantly Navels and some Valencia oranges. Sumos and bloods are also available. Mandarin varieties include Honey Murcott and Low Seed Murcott, Imperial and Afourer. Australia can also supply Lemons, Limes and Grapefruit.

Australian suppliers can ship in bulk and/or pack product in almost any format customers prefer. Australian suppliers are experienced global exporters, and many are set up in U.S.
