Berries are the success story of Mexico’s agri-food exports

Juan José Flores, general director of the National Association of Berry Exporters (Aneberries), recently spoke about the reasons that berries are occupying such an important place in Mexico’s agriculture. He stated: “Our berries are the main Mexican agri-food export product, above tequila and beer. In October last year, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) confirmed this news and highlighted that Mexican strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries are reaching 38 countries.”

Although in Mexico there is an old tradition regarding strawberry production, the berry market at the beginning of this century was practically non-existent. Blackberries began to appear on production charts in the mid-90s, while raspberries and blueberries began to take off almost a decade later. Today, the nation is the number one producer of blackberries in the world. Second place in raspberry, sixth in blueberry. And if we talk about berries in general, Mexico is the second place in production, only behind China.
