Switzerland: Fenaco subsidiary frigemo focuses on sustainability along the supply chain

"Our gastro customers and their guests want to know where the products come from"

"Various projects and discussions are underway in the area of sustainability - the topic has also been topical for us for some time. More and more restaurateurs and hoteliers are approaching us with inquiries about where or from which farms their fruits and vegetables come. At the same time, we are in the process of recording CO2 emissions across the Group. We want to analyze the emissions and take further measures to reduce them. Sustainability is also a big issue when it comes to growing food. More and more farmers are turning to geothermal energy, photovoltaics and biogas," says Nicole Berger, a business economist at frigemo trading companies, a subsidiary of the Fenaco Group.

Regionality is central to the selection of producing companies, she said. Berger: "Wherever possible, our trading companies select farmers in their region with whom they have a long-standing partnership. This means that, wherever possible, caterers in Basel receive fresh vegetables from Basel producers. Our trading companies Kellenberger (ZH), Gebrüder Marksteiner (BS), Gourmador Zollikofen (BE), Gourmador Unterseen and Michel Comestibles (BEO), Culture Food (FR) and Bonfrais Bongel Berger (VD) are our regional contacts for catering customers and suppliers."

This regional anchoring enables short transport routes to customers and suppliers. In addition, Swiss origin is preferred over imports wherever possible. "We also attach importance to the various labels: various organic labels and IP Suisse for fresh products, but Fairtrade Max Havelar is also an important label for bananas. With our Swiss meat range, we try to offer the Agri-Natura variety as far as possible," Berger further said.
