The storms accompanied by hail recorded this week have affected more than 1,700 hectares, mainly of citrus crops, in the regions of Plana Baixa and Costera and some inland towns of the Spanish province of Castellon. The estimated value of the losses comes close to one million Euro. Damages have also been reported in the region of La Safor, but to a much more limited extent than in the other two, according to La Unió de Llauradors.
In the regions of Castellon, a total of 1,308 hectares have been affected, according to the organization's estimations. Most of the damage has been reported in the region of Plana Baixa, in about 708 hectares of citrus crops, especially in Les Alqueries, and also in about 600 hectares of olive and almond trees in inland locations. The overall losses amount to 641,000 Euro.
In the Costera region, the most affected municipality is Rotglà i Corberà, where damages are reported in about 454 hectares, mainly of citrus crops, but also of kakis and other fruits and vegetables. The value of the losses is estimated at close to 331,000 Euro.
La Unió de Llauradors said that all the people who insured their citrus crops last year, but failed to do so this year, will be left without compensation after the criticized elimination of the extension of guarantees, which even sparked some protests.
