Rajshahi mango growers fear low yield due to severe heat & drought

Rajshahi division growers are afraid of low production of their mango crops–as they have been hit hard by severe a heatwave affecting the region for the past two weeks. Mango growers fear that their production in the region was expected to decline by over 20 per cent this season as marble-size mangoes were drying up and dropping from trees due to unusually high temperature and water shortage.

Mahidur Rahman, a mango grower in the Kansat area under Chapainawabganj, said that about 20 per cent of mangoes dropped off naturally every year due to various reasons. ‘But this year about 40 per cent of mangoes, which were at marble stage, dried up and dropped in the past two weeks due to severe dry spell,’ he said.

Ismail Khan Shamim, general secretary, Shibganj Mango Producer Co-Operative Society, said that they had to irrigate their orchards twice a day to prevent raw mangoes from drying up and dropping, increasing their production costs by 20 per cent.
