Dole China flies its Golden Puyat Durian directly into Shanghai's HuiZhan market

First ever arrival of Philippines durians in China

On Jan.7, 2023, China Customs officially announced the import access of Philippine Durians into China, and on April 7th, 2023, at 14:30, the first batch of Dole Golden Puyat durians arrived on the Shanghai Huizhan market. This symbolizes the official start of exports of Philippine durian to China. Dole is one of the first companies to introduce Philippine durian into China.

Earlier this year in January, Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos made his state visit to China, and met with top enterprises from the Philippines and China. Dole also attended the round-table discussion on details of Philippine durian import to China. And great confidence was expressed by Mr. Marcos on the market access and opportunity for Philippines durian.

Since then, the Philippines has become yet another country which was granted access to import fresh durians to China. And this import further enhanced the friendship between the people of these two countries, and also will create a new buzz of durian consumption by durian lovers.

Great Potential of durian consumption in China
China is the 3rd largest consumer of durians after Indonesia and the Philippines, and durian consumption in China accounts for 20% of global market consumption. In 2020, durian import value topped the imported fruit list, and in 2021, China import 820,000 tons of fresh durians and the import value was up to $4.2 billion. The average growth rate of durian consumption from 2010 to 2019 reached 16%, and China is expected to be the top durian consumption country by 2030.

Durian is known as “the King of all Fruits”, because it’s rich in various nutrients ie. Vitamins, amino acids and minerals, and is becoming one the most popular tropical fruits in China.

China is expected to rank 1st place by 2030 in terms of durian consumption

In 2020, total plantation of durian in the Philippines reached 16,000 acres, and volume reached 100,000 tons. The vast plantation and volume makes the Philippines a great rival to Thailand and Vietnam. There are many varieties of durians planted in the Philippines, and Puyat is favored by both consumers from domestic and global market and also growers, and is the major variety being consumed in the country and exported.

Dole Golden Puyat Durian
Dole Golden Puyat Durians are grown in Davos, which is also known as the durian city, or the fruit basked of the Philippines, and the yield accounts for 78% of the volume of the whole country.

Davos is surrounded by mountains and the altitude is below 800 meters, all-year-round rainfall and temperature doesn’t vary much and temperatures remain around 20-32 degrees, which is extremely advantageous for durian growth. After the durian import access, China is expected to be the top destination of Davos durian export.

Dole Golden Puyat Durians are grown in the core area of Davos city, and they are selected by senior farmers from durian trees of over 20 years old. Only A class durian are selected and packed, and each durian is of over 4 chambers and rich in golden pulp, with an over 40% edible rate. The pulp of Dole Golden Puyat Durians has a creamy texture and the taste is rich and sweet. The brix can be as high as 30-40 degree when it’s 100% ripe.
