Lemons and limes well-advertised at the beginning of Lent

Last week, retailers were preparing for the beginning of Lent and aimed to help shoppers create tasty, meat-free meals. Lemons and limes were well advertised, often in the seafood section of flyers. Other Lent favorites including Poblano peppers, cactus pads, and chayote were also popular.

The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus ads) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit this week included apple juice at 24 percent and Honeycrisp apples at 14 percent. Significant decreases included blackberries at 13 percent, avocados at 12 percent, red seedless grapes at 11 percent, and red cherries at 10 percent.

Significant changes in price this week for potatoes and onions included a 26 percent increase for Russet potatoes (5 lb.); there were no significant decreases. Significant increases in price for vegetables this week included only broccoli crowns at 18 percent. There were no significant decreases.
