Interview with Maria Pezone of Società Egiziaca

Italian iceberg lettuce grower seeks new markets in Germany

"Our iceberg lettuce harvest started in October with a crop of 75 tons per week and constant sales. This year we have already achieved great results thanks to the expansion of the cultivated areas, a refinement of cultivation techniques and good planning," says Maria Pezone from the cultivation company Società Egiziaca in the southern Italian province of Naples.

Società Egiziaca harvests iceberg lettuce eight months a year on an area of 100 hectares. Grower manager Maria Pezone and managing director Antonio Pezone will visit Fruit Logisica in Berlin on 8 February.

"Based on the experience of the last five years, we can say that we have achieved excellent results. Iceberg lettuce is a product that requires a lot of technique. Only with the right cultivation methods it is possible to achieve satisfactory results. It is not easy to grow iceberg lettuce in Italy for eight months of the year in these quantities," says Maria.

"Climate change is evident this year. The hot, humid climate until mid-January has made pest and disease control more complex. Also, the growing cycle has been upset, with lettuce developing vigorously and then slowly."

Every year Egiziaca expands the area under iceberg lettuce in order to better specialize in this crop and offer the Italian and foreign markets a consistent supply for eight months of the year. "We also achieved excellent cultivation and quality results for lamb's lettuce this year. We can guarantee a delivery of 3.5 tons per week. Our product is highly appreciated by the processing industry. We harvest lamb's lettuce from October to April. The quality is excellent due to the good soil and climate conditions in Campania," concluded Maria Pezone.

The Società Egiziaca is currently preparing the planting of netted melons to be harvested from the beginning of May to the end of June.
