“Demand from the catering trade is not great, but not as bad as you would expect given the cost-of-living crisis"

The mushroom trade is better than expected, according to Bruce White from Bruce White Ltd. a specialist mushroom trader based in New Covent Garden wholesale market in London.

“I can’t say we have seen a great boost from Veganuary, but it doesn’t do us any harm. Our most popular mushroom is the button mushroom which the hospitality trade likes.”

Bruce imports mushrooms mostly from Eastern Europe, but also from China, Korea and other parts of Europe.

“Demand from the catering trade is not great at the moment, but not as bad as you would expect given the cost-of-living crisis. There has also been no decline in sales of our more expensive exotic varieties. We have seen an increase in prices in the last few months due the rise in energy prices in Europe, we have no choice but to pass this on to our customers. You would expect this to have a knock-on effect on sales but that has not happened.”

Bruce supplies a multitude of customers from high-end restaurants and hotels to schools and colleges.
