At the latest edition of Interpoma in Bolzano, Kurt Raffl showcased its Agrarkurtsystem system - a tested system to protect orchards from the rain and hail while at the same time producing electricity.
"A series of photovoltaic panels is placed above the trees. They can be one meter or 50 cm wide and protection nets are installed between them," explains Kurt Raffl.
"The orchard is covered with a reinforced net that can be opened and closed automatically. It only takes 6 minutes to cover and uncover one hectare and side protection is also available. The panels are placed on top of well-anchored posts. The production of electricity ranges between 400 and 800 Kwh, depending on the size of the chosen panels."

At Interpoma, Raffl explained how this protection also limits the drifting and dispersion of plant protection products. Of course the protection against the rain, hail, frost, wind and excessive sunlight is the system's main goal.
"The preservation and protection of the landscape are guaranteed as the system can be opened and closed. In addition, the solution also acts against evaporation: the persistent lack of water caused by the increase in average temperatures and low precipitation levels is one of the main threats to agriculture. Shielding against the light can reduce evaporation and optimize the limited availability of water."
