With a machine designed by the Italian company Calderoni Rolando, weeds in the orchard or vineyard can be removed in a mechanical way while at the same time soil is compacted toward the plants. One single pass through the row is enough to remove the weeds and tamp the soil toward the plant.
"Interest in mechanical weeding is growing. The use of chemicals is becoming more limited. Environmentally friendly systems are encouraged. We have been building machines for mechanical weeding for decades and every year we optimize our technologies," explained Alessandro Calderoni.
The basic machine on which the various components for weeding can be mounted is the Unica Jolly. First of all, there are the tamping discs mounted on the Jolly, which allow the soil to be worked and the disc to be pushed in the direction of the plant. The earth is moved automatically of course, so that work can always be done very close to the stem.

Another tool is the Eco Rotor. "This system, on the other hand, eliminates weeds and, even with ultra-dense plants, performs precise mechanical weeding without damaging the plants. In the video shown here, you can see both the high processing speed and the precision and ability to operate without worrying about the irrigation system," continued Calderoni.
The wires are very flexible, which allows for an almost total cleanup, even near the tree trunks. This is useful not only in organic farming, but also in integrated pest management, as the use of herbicides is increasingly restricted. The shaped casing gives the wire a special position that avoids brutal contact with the trunk of the plant.
Various mechanical weeding equipment can be also seen in the video above.
