Unica Group includes berries in its range for the first time following Bonafru's integration

UNICA announced that it is expanding its product portfolio and, for the first time, it will market berries thanks to the incorporation of Bonafrú (Cooperativa Hortofrutícola de Bonares).

Bonafrú, based in the town of Bonares, in the Spanish province of Huelva, is devoted to the production and marketing of strawberries, raspberries and blueberries, and currently has 60 active members, and farms in the Huelva towns of Bonares, Niebla, Moguer, Lucena del Puerto and San Juan del Puerto, as well as in Rociana del Condado, Almonte, Lepe and Villablanca.

Bonafrú's production reached 4.5 million kilos in the last 2020/21 campaign, grown on 350 hectares, and had a turnover of 19 million Euro in the same period. At peak production times, the Huelva-based cooperative generates 2,500 jobs. Some of the main destination markets for its fruit are Germany, the United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. It also exports to a lesser extent to destinations such as France and Portugal.

The president of Bonafrú, Lucas Domínguez, considers it "a privilege" to have joined UNICA "as the first berry company." "There is a strong commitment from both sides to complement the product supply, take advantage of synergies and attract new customers, thereby making it possible to improve the profitability of our partners. We hope that this will be a long-lasting relationship and that the operation will help us bring Huelva's berry sector stronger together."

Bonafrú's incorporation is a significant step for the second-degree cooperative, and not only from the perspective of the concentration of the supply. The president of UNICA, José Martínez Portero, said that "we are expanding our geographical presence, as this is the first cooperative in the Huelva area to join UNICA, and it is also allowing us to add berries to our range. Berries are a highly nutritional product, strongly appreciated in the markets. Bonafrú is therefore helping strengthen UNICA's supply, always with the objective of continuing to grow in terms of range and volume and give the best service to our customers."
