Freddi started harvesting borrettana onions over the past few days. "We started exporting towards the Netherlands and we are very pleased to be working with the country that is considered the 'queen' of onions. We have also started exporting pearl onions to Taiwan, and another European destination is France," explains owner Matteo Freddi.

Diversifying destinations is key so as to have multiple solutions suitable for all kinds of products.
It is also time to harvest shallot. "Consumption in Italy is rather calm. It does not seem like there is a lot of produce available, but demand is still not very high in Italy. At least that is what I think. The situation is livelier abroad."

Freddi reports that all three types (white, golden, red) are demanded abroad, with quotations within the norm. "We are currently collecting borrettana onions to ship them to all markets. Quality is great, as there was no rain that could affect storage, nor storms or hail."
For the exports of pearl onions, Freddi selects grades 20-30 and 30-40 for both northern European countries and Taiwan. "Our product is ready one month early than in northern Europe, this is why we have more room on the market and manage to export well. It could be a good campaign this year, also because container renting costs are really high, so buyers are reconsidering a relatively close market area such as Italy."
