"Red grape export is challenging this year, the competition is fierce"

China is the largest producer and consumer of table grapes. The history of grape cultivation in China is long. In addition to a sizeable domestic market, China also enjoys supply chain and price advantages. There is always Southeast Asian market demand for Chinese grapes. And red grapes are an important grape variety for the export market. Ms. Grace of Zhangpu Yicai Fruit & Vegetable Co., Ltd. recently talked about current conditions in the red grape export market.

"June to August is the red grape production season in Yunnan. The production volume seems to be more or less the same as in previous years. And the export price is similar too. The impact of Covid-19 on the international market has been huge. Purchasing power weakened. That is why we do not think the export conditions will be the same this year as in previous years. Moreover, when Chinese red grapes enter overseas markets, they compete with grapes from Australia, Egypt, and other countries. Market competition is intense. Chinese red grapes are not the only and not the first choice in overseas markets," said Grade. "Domestic grape plantation gradually spreads to a large number of production areas throughout the country, but high-end grape varieties remain in the domestic market as they are too expensive to compete in the international market."

When asked about the impact of the pandemic and the high shipping cost, Grace replied, "early on in the pandemic ports were congested and shipping was often delayed or cargo space was limited. There was no way around higher shipping fees. That had an impact on sales plans. Last year the shipping fees soared, many planned ships were cancelled, and cargo space was insufficient. As export costs rose, the sales volume declined."

This year the pandemic repeatedly resurfaced and the impact on import and domestic distribution has been significant. Some overseas grape exporters reduced their export volume to the Chinese market and shifted to other Asian countries instead. The export volume of Chinese red grapes did not visibly expand. According to Grace, this put pressure on Chinese red grape sales in overseas markets. "Still, Chinese red grapes enjoy advantages. First, shipping between China and Southeast Asia is quicker compared to other suppliers, so the grapes are fresher. Second, Chinese grapes are still cheaper." (Right: Grapes)
