By the end of this year, Portugal may become the country with the largest number of indigenous grape varieties. To do this, the country plans to launch the a new project. Within its framework, they plan to register a total of 50,000 genotypes within one local variety. This will expand the range of wines for sale within the country and abroad.
There are two reasons why the project was dedicated specifically to domestic varieties. The first is that it is the grape varieties, combined with climate and soil, that distinguish Portuguese wines on the world market. The second is related to the fact that this country is positioning itself as a pioneer and world leader in the methodology for the conservation and reproduction of different varieties of berries.
