Nova Siri Genetics, a company that works in the research and development of strawberry and berry varieties, will once again sponsor the International Berry Congress. This company, which is headquartered in Basilicata, Italy, is betting strongly on its development in Huelva.

The company was founded in 2005 by Jose Miguel Arias, a pioneer of Spanish strawberry cultivation, and Nicola Tufaro, a geneticist. Since then, they have patented 10 strawberry varieties and other varieties that are about to be launched on the market that, according to the company, will bring great value to Huelva's farmers.

In Italy, its varieties account for 37% of the 2,500 hectares cultivated with strawberries in the south of the country. This corresponds to 62 million plants distributed. Nova Siri Genetics is consolidating its presence in Spain year after year, to the point of accounting for 9% (35 million plants) of the total number of strawberry plants distributed to Huelva producers in 2021 (source: Freshuelva). "The most popular varieties are Melissa, NSG 203 – Marimbella, NSG 207 – Gioelita, and NSG 120 – Rossetta, all of which are for short days, rustic and vigorous, with a production that begins in January and continues until June."

The company has an office in Palos de la Frontera, from where it advises and solves any doubts that farmers have. In addition, it has recently opened a new research center in Policoro (southern Italy) equipped with the latest technology. The center has a research laboratory, a 500 m² highly technological and innovative greenhouse and 10,000 m² of experimental fields. The inauguration of this laboratory had an international scope. It was attended by representatives of the Italian strawberry sector, Spanish nurseries, producers, and other guests from Tunisia, Mexico, and Australia.

Given the success and interest that the event has aroused, Nova Siri Genetics plans to organize an annual open day, so that everyone interested in knowing more about their project can visit the center.

Nova Siri Genetics' research is aimed at producers in the Mediterranean basin. Its goal is to add value to the strawberry sector with the introduction of innovative varieties that meet the needs of producers and consumers. They focus on three main points: rusticity, quality, and precocity. Their goal is to obtain varieties that are tolerant to the main soil and aerial fungal pathogens to reduce the use of agrochemicals, which would benefit farmers and improve consumer health.
