The first Barbastro tomatoes that were put on sale this Saturday, the 18th of June, in the Market Square by Oscar Olivera, the president of Hortelanos, and Armando Mestre, from Pozán de Vero, have had an excellent reception among buyers who highlighted the quality of the product.
Mestre has planted 30,000 tomatoes in Pozán de Vero. "The freshest product is to be sold in the market, and the remaining product will be canned by the industry. Pink tomato jam is very well accepted, but the campaign prospects are good. We'll have to increase the price a bit because inputs and production costs have increased. If we don't raise prices, we'll be selling under costs."
According to Oscar Olivera, they expect to produce a similar volume to the one achieved in the 2021 campaign, when they produced around 2,200,000 kg, as the weather has been very good so far. "Fortunately, we were not affected by the strong frost in April."
The number of producers has barely increased, as there are two or three new small producers. "The doors of the Association remain open, and production will increase due to the high percentages of Terra Agronómica, whose production will be delayed until July. Prices, however, will have to be updated for the product to be sustainable."
