Now in his third year, farmer Leon Kurz from Buchholz in der Nordheide is devoting himself to growing and marketing garlic. He grows it on 2.5 hectares and markets them under the brand name "Heidjer Knoblauch" to farm stores, regional retailers and restaurants in the Hamburg area and the Lüneburg Heath. The 23-year-old supplies a total of about 35-40 buyers with garlic.
"I wanted to broaden our operation. By growing and marketing fresh garlic - instead of dried, as is often the case - we have a unique selling point in our region," Kurz says. The harvest of fresh garlic begins in mid-May, when it is gently harvested, cleaned and packaged by hand. From August, Kurz starts harvesting the garlic dried. Thanks to the modern storage technology, the northern German garlic is available until winter.
