UK shoppers cut spending by most since COVID lockdown in 2021
British shoppers, facing a surge in inflation, cut their spending in May by the most since the country was in a coronavirus lockdown in early 2021, a new survey has found. The British Retail Consortium (BRC) said total retail spending was 1.1% lower than a year earlier, the biggest fall since January last year and representing an acceleration from April's 0.3% decline.

Croatia: Studenac surpasses 1,000-store mark with Lonia acquisition
Croatian retailer Studenac has completed its acquisition of rival Lonia Trgovina, adding 300 stores to its network and reinforcing its position as Croatia's largest grocer by store count. The Omiš-based group now boasts a network of more than 1,000 stores, with the number of outlets almost tripling over the past three years. Its headcount has increased to more than 5,500 as a result of the acquisition.

New Zealand: Supie announces tax free produce this June, as the online supermarket turns one
Grocery alternative Supie is celebrating its first birthday this June and to celebrate is giving its customers 15% off all fresh produce for the month. Supie applauds the government for continuing the conversation in response to the Commerce Commission report, however believes the action taken is not going to help consumers' pockets today. So in response, for the entire month of June, Supie wants to give back to its members and will be returning 15% GST to members accounts off produce purchases for the entire month to spend as Supie cash for their next shop.

India: Reliance Retail pilots grocery delivery service through new platform, app
Reliance Retail has started instant grocery delivery service through a new platform and app under the JioMart Express brand, with trials currently ongoing in Navi Mumbai. The company plans to expand the service by this calendar year end to more than 200 cities and towns where JioMart is currently operational, two industry executives said. With this, Reliance will compete against Tata-owned Bigbasket, Zomato-funded Blinkit, Swiggy’s Instamart, Walmart-owned Flipkart Quick and Zepto.

Greece: Nikos Lavidas new Brand President Alfa Beta Vassilopoulos
Nikos Lavidas has been appointed Brand President of Greek supermarket chain Alfa Beta Vassilopoulos (‘Alfa Beta’), effective August 20th. Careem suspends food-delivery business in Pakistan over unfavourable economic conditions
Careem is suspending its food delivery business in Pakistan, as it looks to redirect efforts to its ride-hailing and delivery verticals, announced the company in an exclusive statement to Business Recorder. The company, which gained popularity as a ride-hailing app before expanding to become a multi-service platform, added that it will “look to restart the service again in the future when the economic condition is more favourable”.

UK: Sainsbury’s CEO’s pay triples to £3.8mln as firm rejects living wage calls
Sainsbury’s has revealed that its chief executive, Simon Roberts, received pay worth £3.8mln in the latest financial year even as it rejected calls from big investors for it to ensure all workers in its stores receive a living wage. Roberts’s total pay nearly tripled for the year to March from the £1.3m he received in 2021, when he waived his bonus in light of the coronavirus pandemic, according to figures published in the supermarket’s annual report.
