Production season will begin later than usual

Production volume of Chinese bayberries from Xianju declined by 25%

This year the temperatures were lower than last year, and there was more rainfall. That is why the production season of Xianju bayberries started 3-5 days later than last year. The chestnut bayberries from Xianju are expected to enter the market on the 8th of June, while Dongkui bayberries from Xianju are expected to enter the market on the 15th of June.

The supply season will continue until early July. Extreme weather conditions in the last few months affected the production volume and product quality of bayberries this year. In the end, the production volume in Xianju seems to have shrunk by around 25% compared to last year.

Ying Jun, the head of Xianju County Junlang Specialized Planters Cooperation, recently talked about current conditions in the bayberry production areas.

"This year the production volume declined, but the individual berries were able to absorb more nutrients. The bayberries are bigger than last year. The percentage of large berries is higher than usual. The first bayberry variety to begin the harvest was the chestnut bayberry. The cost price of bayberries increased by 5%-8% compared to last year because the cost of resources, labor, and distribution all increased, and the production volume declined."

When asked about retail channels, Ying Jun replied, "this year the production volume declined, and the cost price of bayberries rose, so orchards temporarily stopped opening up for clients who pick their own berries. Instead, online retail and wholesale markets have become the main sales channels. The ongoing pandemic stimulates online promotions and online retail. In addition, we are promoting the export of our bayberries. We have already strengthened negotiations and strategic cooperation with customs agencies. We mainly focus on countries with simple and convenient customs procedures."

"As for packing, we have simple bags, as well as vacuum bags and individually packed bayberries. These packing methods help extend the shelf life of our bayberries, and keep them fresh for longer. And the bright designs of our packaging attracts the attention of customers."

The orchard of Xianju County Junlang Specialized Planters Cooperation has more than 500 bayberry trees. The main varieties are chestnut bayberries and Dongkui bayberries. The Dongkui bayberries are by far the more popular variety in the domestic market.
