The Chinese Academy of Thermal Sciences developed a new variety of "Rock Sugar Red Pineapple"

Recently, the Chinese Academy of Thermal Sciences has successfully bred a new variety of rock sugar red pineapple, the skin of which is orange-red, and the taste is as sweet as rock sugar when ripe. This variety has been promoted and planted in Hainan, Guangdong, and other provinces.

In 2005, the Institute of Tropical Crop Variety Resources of the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences introduced the crown buds and suction buds of 2 red pineapple varieties from Taiwan. They were planted, evaluated, identified, and screened in the pineapple germplasm garden of the institute, and the best quality mother plant was selected for planting. After the introduction of the species, continuous selection and domestication were carried out. The selected crown buds are short and dignified, and the leaves have a small number of thorns and produce basically thornless and excellent offspring; they were named "Rock Sugar Red Pineapple".

"Rock Sugar Red Pineapple" can be used both as a food or as ornamental plants. Growers can decide the planting method and fruit harvest period according to the use and market demand.

Generally, it is mainly planted using the methods for ornamental plants in the agricultural planting and sightseeing gardens, or tropical scenic areas in Hainan and Guangdong.

The other method is the same as the cultivation of ordinary pineapples, mainly to harvest fruit to meet market demand. This is a food-based planting method.

"Rock Sugar Red Pineapple" has orange-red skin in the green period, and the fruit can be appreciated as a plant for a long time. After the skin turns completely dark yellow, the fruit ripens. The flesh is pale yellow, juicy, sweet, and sour.

Through the introduction of seeds, the Chinese Academy of Thermal Sciences has collected and preserved 162 copies of various types of pineapple germplasm resources in the world in recent years. 6 new varieties with a short nutritional period and red skin have been created through the identification and evaluation of germplasm resources, of which 2 new varieties have been authorized ("Jade Linglong" and "Golden Ball"), and 1 new variety has been evaluated (by "Golden Barrel" Cantonese Fruit Evaluation). Through interspecific hybridization, more than 28,000 hybrid offspring groups have been obtained.
