Retractable roof solutions high on the agenda of Australia’s berry and cherry growers

From June 6 to 8, Hort Connections will be held in Brisbane, Australia. Cravo has been exhibiting at this event since 2016 and is looking forward to being present again. “It is the premier event for the Australian and New Zealand horticultural industries, getting together growers, market & industry development, research, and allied trade,” says Bede Miller with Cravo in Australia. “It is a valuable opportunity to network and learn from all parties across multiple cropping sectors,” he added.

Optimizing the environment
Miller expects a lot of interest for Cravo’s lowest cost retractable roof orchard and field models. “They are high on the agenda, particularly in the higher value berry and cherry sectors.” The ability to automate, optimize the environment, and protect from adverse conditions in only a matter of minutes is intriguing. “These factors have become even more important in view of increasing production costs and lack of labor availability.” Both the market and producers are looking for solutions to manipulate harvest timing, as well as increase yield, first-grade pack out, and fruit quality (firmness, brix, size). The reduction of variable production costs such as picking labor efficiency and labor comfort are also major contributors toward an attractive 5-year return on investment.

With over 75 different retractable solutions and over 40 years of experience, Cravo is able to offer solutions to cover fields and orchards. “The systems are appropriate for climates where energy efficient cooling and protection from heat are most critical, especially given the ever-increasing cost of energy than conventional systems may utilize.”

International attendance
Last year, Hort Connections took place again after a 1-year hiatus due to the pandemic. “We exhibited at the event in 2021, and while Australia’s borders were closed, the event was still a success.” However, this year the expectations are higher. “With borders open and travel confidence increasing, we are hoping for higher attendance from interstate and international visitors,” said Miller. Even with the lingering nervousness to travel due to the pandemic, people are looking forward to meeting in person again. “There is a level to human nature where in-person communication cannot be replaced.”
