Growing demand for avocado oil from Kenya

“We maximize our production during the high season”

Avocado oil is a booming product, according to Irene Njeri, CEO of Kenyan avocado oil exporter Vegbatian: “We’ve noticed a growing demand when it comes to avocado oil, especially in the European market. The avocado oil is used in both the cosmetics as well as food industries. Europe has the largest cosmetics market in the world and the personal care market is growing at a remarkable pace. Canada is also a notable destination for our avocado oil.”

“The health and nutritional value of avocado oil makes it stand out. The rising demand for both conventional and organic avocado oil is driven by the growth in sales of natural and organic personal care products.”

Since Kenya has two separate seasons, one of which produces fewer fruits, it’s not easy to be able to ship the avocado oil year-round, says Irene. “The main challenge when dealing in avocado oil, would be the lack of a full year supply. This is because we only have two seasons of avocado fruit in Kenya. April to July is the main season, while the second season is relatively low in production, hence fewer fruits for the processing market. We maximize our production during the high season to meet our customers demand throughout the year.”

Thankfully, there have been no issues with shipping the product, Irene explains. “We have not experienced logistics problems up to now, thanks to Maerskline, that docks in our Mombasa port every week. This makes it easier to pre-plan for our upcoming shipments. We are now at the peak time of production until July, when we are having Hass and Fuerte fruits. We expect the production cost to go higher due to high demand and low supply.” Njeri concludes
