The harvesting of red onions from Acquaviva should start in mid-June. Although bulbs are still growing and ripening, the first purchase and supply proposals from Italian and European markets are already arriving.
"Onions have already reached a weight of 250-300 g and will increase reaching 500 g to 1 kg over the next 10 days. Markets are lively and we already have some agreements in central-northern Italy. There is a lot of interest from abroad too and, in addition to Germany and France, this year we will also export to Sweden and Finland," reports Giammarco Lionetti, sales manager at Agriconetto, a company that covers 10 hectares. "The drought is one of the most worrying problems for us and the high temperatures of the past couple of weeks have not helped. Water is essential for the growth of onions. We have already carried out 5 irrigation cycles since the beginning of April and we will do another one of the batches transplanted early. The hot weather of the past few days forces us to irrigate at nighttime so that water can penetrate in depth without drying up too fast."
"We are certain it will be an excellent campaign when it comes to both production and trade. Prices are 20% higher due to the increases of fuel, packaging, fertilizer and energy costs, though it does not seem to be a problem when it comes to sales. People are aware of how difficult the current situation is and we cannot wait to start!"
