Analysis of China's banana imports in April 2022

According to customs data, China imported 222,100 tons of bananas (222,100,375kg) in April 2022, with an import value of US$14,1673,434. Imports increased by 3.07% from March and decreased by 1.87% from April 2021; the cumulative import volume from January to April 2022 was 742,800 tons (742,849,127kg), an increase of 10.41% from the same period in 2021. The shipment situation at various ports has improved slightly, and the Dongxing port of China and Vietnam, which has been closed for two months, also resumed customs clearance in late April.

The average import price of bananas in April 2022 was about US$637.88/ton, up 0.42% month-on-month and 18.08% year-on-year. Affected by the prevention and control of the pandemic, some foreign producing areas have experienced poor shipments and rising freight rates. In some production bases, the detention of bananas is serious, the rate of high-quality bananas is low, and the price of bananas that meet the export standards is higher than that of the same period last year.

In April 2022, China's largest source of imports remained Vietnam, accounting for 42%, an increase of 1 percentage point from the previous month. The second and third places are the Philippines and Cambodia, with 28% and 18%, respectively. Affected by factors such as Panama disease and international logistics, the proportion of Philippine bananas in the Chinese market has gradually decreased in the past two years. Coupled with the impact of China's domestic prevention and control measures, port transportation is not smooth.

Shanghai Port is one of the most important ports for Philippine bananas to enter China. Although it can operate normally during prevention and control, the overall container volume has declined, and the vehicular traffic procedures are cumbersome, which has affected the entry of bananas to a certain extent. Cambodia can still maintain the top three importing countries of Chinese bananas, but due to the lack of refrigeration facilities for its agricultural products, and with the strengthening of China's quarantine policy, the supply of domestic production areas has gradually increased. In the next period of time, the export of Cambodian bananas to China will not be positive.
