US: Asian grocery start-up Weee draws shoppers with tradition, tech and a dash of Hollywood
Online grocery delivery start-up Weee! encourages customers to share videos of recipes and favorite items on its app. It specializes in hard-to-find Asian foods, along with fruits, vegetables and other staples. The company, which sells Asian and Hispanic groceries, hired “Crazy Rich Asians” director Jon M. Chu as its chief creative officer earlier this year.

US: Grocery chain H Mart files for permit to build first Florida location in Orange County
The New Jersey-based Asian grocery chain H Mart is planning to open its first Florida location in Orange County. Records show the company filed for a permit with the county, looking to redevelop the property at 7501 W. Colonial Drive, which used to be a Super Target. According to the permit, the company wants to “modify the existing building into an H-Mart, food hall, and sub-tenant spaces”. It is not clear when the redevelopment could begin or when the store and food hall might open. It also not stated how many stalls will be available in the food hall.

US: Plant-based meal delivery service Mosaic opens first brick-and-mortar store
Plant-based delivery service Mosaic Foods made the jump from DTC to its first brick-and-mortar store in Brooklyn. Located at 607A Vanderbilt Ave. in the Prospect Heights neighborhood, Mosaic Foods Market offers over 70 chef-prepared vegetarian and vegan meals, plus smoothies and sampling counter to introduce customers to its flavors. The store will be open for at least six months, accompanied by the company’s first OOH campaign to drive foot traffic.

There's a delivery service for nearly everything these days, and in the case of groceries, there are countless options. One of the newer companies in the US, Gorillas, is celebrating one year of operating in New York City by looking at order data and telling us about ourselves. Everyone seems to want to get their groceries delivered at the same time of the week. According to Gorillas' NYC data and international data, the most common time customers have groceries delivered is at 7 pm on Sundays.

Delikatesy Centrum, part of the Eurocash Group, has opened a new concept supermarket in Wrocław in a refreshed 'ReFresh' format. The new concept is that of a compact supermarket with an extended fresh produce offering, as well as a selection of hot dishes prepared daily in the store.

UK: Rowe to exit M&S with jump in profits, but much still to do
Steve Rowe will step down as chief executive of British retailer Marks & Spencer after a turbulent six years in the top job, with his internal successor set for a baptism of fire amid a worsening cost-of-living crisis. Rowe, who joined M&S at the age of 15 before rising through the ranks, will end a 39-year career at the clothing and food group after presenting annual results on Wednesday that are expected to show a jump in profits.

Dutch organic supermarket chain Marqt is to be renamed Ekoplaza Foodmarqt, according to media reports, close to three years after its takeover by Ekoplaza. According to Ekoplaza, the name change took some time as the integration of both formulas was prioritised by the retailer.

Australia: Coles using plastic marine waste to make shopping bags
Customer shopping bags made with marine waste and recycled plastic are being rolled out to Coles supermarkets around the country as part of Coles’ Together to Zero waste ambition. Coles’ Marine Reusable Shopping Bags are made with 80% recycled plastic, including 20% marine waste plastic. The marine waste plastic is recovered from ocean-feeding waterways and inland areas primarily within Malaysia. The bags support the delivery of Australia’s 2025 National Packaging Targets, specifically increasing the amount of recycled content.
