Demand for Saudi dates up by 25% in Mangaluru

Dates and dry fruit traders witnessed a rise in the demand for Saudi dates by 25% this Ramadan. One trader said that one of the main reasons for the rise in demand for Saudi dates is a fall in their prices. Saudi dates that used to be priced at Rs 350 to Rs 1,700/kg before the pandemic dropped to Rs 250- Rs 1,200/kg this season.

The trader said: “Saudi Arabia recorded a bumper crop in August-September last year, and the country generates huge revenue from exporting dates and pilgrimage tourism. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, tourism was hit for the last two years, and they exported dates in large quantities, due to which the prices have seen a drop by almost 25%.”
