The Italian company Fellini Patrizio

Zero residue strawberries and smaller baskets for spring 2022

Although slightly delayed compared to a standard season, due to the weather conditions, zero residue strawberries from Fellini Patrizio of Gambettola (Forlì-Cesena, Italy) are now available in the traditional 500-gram basket, and this year they are also available in a 300-gram basket.

"The 300-gram format idea was introduced last year, so we decided to relaunch it. We received many inquiries about solutions to try to reduce waste to a minimum. Strawberries are extremely delicate and, at the same time, sought-after. However, families are decreasing in number and a 500-gram tray may not be consumed immediately. The 300-gram basket is an ideal serving size to be consumed in a short time, thus avoiding possible waste."

These are residue-free strawberries and the hectares dedicated to this product are about thirty, all grown under protected cultivation, and are located in Albania. "The farm we work with has an Italian management team that collaborates directly with the field technicians and the top management of our company, which proposes and manages the marketing. With regards to packaging, we made use for the first time of completely recycled cardboard under the name Io Riciclo and new generation baskets made of mono material R-PET, which is even more efficient. This is a new model without bubble wrap, with a special undulation on the bottom, which greatly improves air circulation, increasing shelf-life and product appearance."

"These strawberries are grown according to a very precise procedure during all cultivation operations so as to limit, and often eliminate, pesticide treatments. They are certified by the CCPB and we are now reintroducing them on the market with all the standards that allow them to have the label zero residue," explained Fellini.

The cost of the 300-gram tray is also lower than that of the 500-gram tray, making it easier to purchase since consumers are more and more careful about the purchase price, especially during this period. "But what counts most is the quality of zero-residue strawberries. We are already into our fourth year of expertise, and the feedback is increasingly positive," concluded Fellini.
