Gerhard Allgäuer on the newly founded Global Fields LTd

"We want to relieve retailers of risks and give them flexibility"

Global Fields Ltd has been operating in Germany since August. The new company is primarily dedicated to the import and distribution of overseas exotics and soft fruits from Latin America. As the managing director Gerhard Allgäuer informed us, the company offers the entire fruit logistics packet from one source.

Fresh raspberries for the world market.

Thanks to strategic partnerships, Global Fields has access to production facilities (for soft fruits, exotics and asparagus, among others) in Latin America. "We focus on both food retail and wholesale and operate on an agency basis. We deal not only in direct imports from overseas to Germany, but also to the U.S. and the Middle East. We are primarily concerned with developing the existing brands globally."

Strong dollar exchange rates & rising logistics costs
For both air and ocean transportation, freight rates are known to be at an all-time high. "We handle all fruit logistics ourselves, which is already an advantage in times of pandemics. Nevertheless, we are also feeling the effects of rising freight costs. Fortunately, there have been no bottlenecks so far, only slight shortages. Nevertheless, the strong US dollar and rising logistics costs have led to weak demand for our products from overseas, especially in November and December. However, we are now seeing an increase in demand for exotic varieties."

Soft fruit is produced both in tunnels and greenhouses, ensuring year-round supply.

On the sales side, there is significant growth potential. "Grocery retail has great potential, but so do certain parts of the restaurant industry. Geographically, there is a lot going on in the Middle East, and the U.S. also has a strong presence in the global fruit trade. Germany remains an important market, especially since we are dealing with a niche within a niche. We see growth potential in various countries around the Mediterranean. Here we are also working on logistics solutions for customers in these countries."

Protected berry cultivation is clearly on the rise.

Full flexibility
Flexibility is the keyword in fruit logistics, he says: "Although import and distribution by air freight is our core competence, we can easily switch to land or sea transport if necessary. In doing so, we can take advantage of the synergies between the different areas of our company. Ultimately, our main aim is to relieve retailers of risks and offer full flexibility," says Allgäuer.
