Dino helps move his melons

With imported Dino melons continuing on peak on availability this month, grower-shipper Agricola Famosa USA has brought on some help from a friend to move more melons.

Dino is the mascot of the white-skinned, green spotted high Brix melon that’s proprietary to Agricola Famosa and imported from Brazil. “We have a really strong season with Dino this year and he’s helped our sales increase,” says Fred Tavares, international business manager for Agricola. “The customers are really happy with our Dino and when he goes to stores, sales increase by more than 300 percent.”

To date, Dino, who is fully booked until the end of the season, has made in-store appearances to support sampling programs in Florida and Texas and he’ll soon be seen in stores around Pennsylvania, starting with Philadelphia this weekend.

The Dino melon season, which has seen more volume this year over last, began importing in the middle of October and shipments will keep coming until March. “We should have a reduction in sales by the second week of March,” says Tavares. “This time of the year is the best moment to sell the Dino because we do not have to pay the USA duties to import the melons and the price is more attractive.”
