Benguet mayor Victorio Palangdan underscored the urgent need to monitor and counter the entry of smuggled vegetables, not only in the region but in the entire country. Palangdan wants to create a local anti-smuggling task force to be assigned in the Bureau of Customs (BOC) and the Department of Agriculture (DA) to stop the entry of smuggled vegetables that directly compete with locally produced ones.
Palangdan said the smuggling of vegetables from other countries has a serious negative impact on the province's agriculture industry, and suggested that the provincial government invest in the organization of a local anti-smuggling task force to preserve and protect the status of Benguet as the major producer of highland vegetables in the country.
