"Last summer, we were asked to try out a new strawberry variety - Limvalnera. We have always been open to research and innovation so we accepted, also because we were curious to understand how this cultivar would behave if grown using the vertical aeroponic technique. Transplants of our 5 thousand plants started in October," reports Anna Cirigliano from FruitHydroSinni, a Basilicata company that produces an commercializes fruits and vegetables using hydroponic and aeroponic techniques.
"Three months later, the experimental crop located in Policoro (Matera) is looking excellent. Plants are well-developed and blossoming seems extraordinary. The variety is rustic and very resistant to various diseases, with a production calendar that goes from early January to June. We have completed the first two harvesting operations of 2022, but quantities will become more abundant soon thanks to the sun and temperatures expected for the next few days. Fruits have a conical shape, with high Brix levels and a bright red color. The flesh is red too, with a good firmness when fruits are completely ripe. The shelf-life is good too."
"Our clients appreciated the first Limvalnera strawberries a lot, also because the cultivation technique has a low environmental impact and fruits are free from nickel, histamine and other heavy metals such as aluminum and lead. This means they are great also for consumers with allergies or food intolerances who would not normally be able to eat them."
