Potato market report week 47:

'In many places, the reemergence of the pandemic caused many planning uncertainties'

Business often fell short of the actual possibilities. In many places, the renewed Covid circumstances caused planning uncertainties. Nevertheless, prices mostly remained at last week's levels. Slight corrections could only be avoided in Berlin and Munich. The first Annabelles from Cyprus were sighted in Hamburg.

Rhineland-Palatinate: potato supply meets demand
Typically, the market is more quiet in November. The potato supply has adapted to the restrained market situation, but still covers demand well. Sortings are still at a higher level. Uncertainty exists as to how strongly the increase in incidences could affect sales to restaurants and canteen kitchens.

Hesse: Slow demand
A somewhat slow demand determines the market situation for potatoes, says the State Office of Agriculture Hesse. Despite repeated sales campaigns in food retailing, sales remain within the usual range. Hopes for a revival are now directed towards Christmas sales. Meanwhile, tighter Corona measures could lead to another slump. Packers are reporting inhomogeneous batches with rejects of up to 40%. As a result, deliveries have to be bumped in some cases. Producer prices for good quality lots are showing signs of firming and further adjustments are expected to date.

Lower Saxony: market progressing well
According to the basis (grading 35 - 65, less than 8% defects, light- and firm-skinned, loose, free collection point per 100 kg) the following prices were paid last week:

Depending on the quality, surcharges or discounts are still possible. Please note the following market information: The market continued to progress well. Quality problems due to rot occurred in some cases, reports the Lower Saxony Farmers' Association.

Schleswig-Holstein: Troubled situation due to Corona
According to a report from the Schleswig-Holstein Chamber of Agriculture, increasing Corona-related restrictions are causing troubles in the potato wholesale business. Due to the cancellation of many major events, such as the Christmas markets, there is concern about the sales of French fries, especially in the processing sector.

This could increase the supply in the table potato sector. Restaurant demand for table potatoes has also decreased. However, this is expected to be offset by higher demand from food retailers if the corona situation continues to worsen. Overall, however, the market remains balanced. Particularly in the southern states, sorting rates are quite high due to quality deficiencies.
