This year's overseas grape season started last week, quite a bit later than usual. "Normally, the first batches from Peru arrive at the beginning of November. But this year, the quality as well as the supply situation for French and Italian grapes has been very good until the third week of November, which is why the overseas season is now starting later," says Jürgen Weiler, stand manager of Rolf Koch Ltd, based at the Karlsruhe wholesale market.

After the end of the grape season in the northern hemisphere, Peru is traditionally the first source of supply from the southern hemisphere. Later, other countries, such as Chile and South Africa, will shape the markets, says Weiler, who is extremely satisfied with the quality of the first overseas merchandise of the Timpson variety. "There is usually an initial uptick in marketing in the pre-Christmas period, after which we distribute the overseas batches into March-April," he continues.
The first white batches from overseas of the season traditionally come from Peru.
Peruvian mangoes
The first mangos from Peru also arrived at the Karlsruhe wholesale company in early November. According to Weiler, the air-freighted Peruvian exotics are a very stable product segment. "The mangoes are usually consistent in quality until the end of the season. The same applies to the price, which is currently around 40 euros/per carton. Last but not least, we see a continuous demand, which traditionally shows a slight increase in the pre-Christmas period."
