Rainfall affects supply situation

Prices of tomatoes and other vegetables spike in Tamil Nadu

Tomato prices in Madurai hit Rs 60-70/kg in wholesale and Rs 100/kg in retail yesterday, after heavy rains impacted the supply. Traders said that the prices of other vegetables, including brinjal, beans, tubers, etc., have also gone up marginally, by around Rs 20/kg.

In Trichy, the price of tomatoes reached Rs 100/kg. The ongoing wedding season is also one of the reasons for the price hike of vegetables, according to vendors from Gandhi market. Normally, Gandhi market receives around 20 to 30 trucks of tomatoes on a daily basis from Andhra Pradesh, Bengaluru, Theni and Oddanchathram. However, rain for the last few days has affected regular supply leading to the price rise, C Prakash, a wholesale trader from Gandhi Market, said.
