Department of Agriculture estimate:

‘Agri losses and damage caused by storm “Maring” have reached P1.74 billion’

Tropical storm ‘Maring’ left the Philippines on October 12, after having caused colossal losses to some 57,000 farmers, fishers and livestock raisers. The regions of Cordillera, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Western Visayas, Central Visayas and Soccskargen were particularly heavily hit.

About P1.4 billion worth of crops were lost, as Maring destroyed 68,137 hectares of farmland and about 91,422 tons of crops, the Department said. The biggest loss was incurred by the rice sector while the rest was sustained by corn farmers, vegetable and other high-value crop growers, fishers, and livestock raisers.

In Ilocos Norte province, infrastructure damage due to Maring was estimated at P170 million, while its agriculture sector sustained losses of about P80 million.
