Special potato pre-sprouting boxes provide a basis for good growth and higher yields

Pre-sprouting for a better potato harvest

According to bekuplast Ltd, a successful harvest depends on many factors besides the weather: The selection of the right varieties, good soil cultivation, balanced fertilization, caring for the plants and, last but not least, the quality of the planting material.

The seedlings are stored in crates for pre-sprouting. "In the past, old wooden crates were used for pre-sprouting, but these did not achieve consistently good results. That's why we developed a special pre-sprouting crate," says Gerold Wilms, of bekuplast Ltd.

In bekuplast's pre-germination crates, the potatoes are optimally ventilated and receive sufficient light, so that uniform germination results are achieved. "The potatoes are stored in our crates for approximately eight to nine weeks. During this time, the potatoes need sufficient light and air. Therefore, our crates, which are filled with 10 to 13 kg of potatoes in a maximum of two layers, have lowered sides for an even incidence of light and a coarse perforation for optimal ventilation. In this way, we achieve a uniform and stable germination pattern for the potatoes," says Gerold Wilms.

The pre-germination crates are made of food-grade HDPE virgin material. "We do not color the material of the crates. As a result, it remains slightly translucent, which further improves the incidence of light, especially in comparison to materials such as wood," Wilms says on the characteristic coloring of the containers. The plastic material also has other advantages: The pre-germination boxes are very robust and durable. After sowing in spring, the hygienic reusable containers are easy to clean and can be stacked and stored crosswise to save space until their next use.
