Heavy rains cause Chinese garlic prices to rise

Jinxiang county, one of the main garlic production areas in China, suffered from continuous rain for more than a week. Some of the garlic farms experienced severe flooding. And even more rain is expected in the next few days. As a result, the garlic price is rising. In addition, this is the time of year when farmers are normally preparing their fields for the new garlic season. This year they are somewhat late because of the extreme weather conditions.

"This is actually a key period for the plantation of next season's garlic. However, some of the fields are completely flooded. There is no way we can plant them under these circumstances. This situation also has an impact on the export price of Chinese garlic. First, the floodwater makes it difficult for farmers to plant new garlic, and there is already a shortage of workers because of the pandemic, which further exacerbates the situation, and adds to the cost price of garlic. Second, the uninterrupted rainfall affects not just the production volume, but the product quality as well. Considering these conditions, farmers and traders with storage become more reluctant to sell. And then the price will certainly rise." This is according to Yang Feng, CEO of Jinxiang County Hengyuan Import and Export Co., Ltd.

CEO Yang continued: "The soaring shipping costs, shipping container shortages, and reduced shipping capacity, all create obstacles for the Chinese garlic export trade. In addition, the Chinese garlic reserve is rather large compared to previous years. The continuous rain will hopefully pull the market price up, but it is still too early to say for certain. We have to wait until the beginning of October to see how the situation develops."
