“Abundant supply of French organic potatoes”

In the new issue of Pomme de Terre Hebdo, CNIPT indicates that “for the second consecutive year, the increase in supply is not in line with what the demand can absorb, in a market that is saturated and limited (less than 3% of the total potato offer).”

Increase in French production
After the 2019-20 campaign marked by higher yields and a bigger harvest, the organic offer is progressing by 15% in 2020-21, estimated at about 65,000 tons of organic potatoes, sold in long circuit under contract, including imports (source: AND-I/CNIPT survey). Nearly 90% of the French harvest comes from the regions Grand-Est, Center, Brittany and Hauts-de-France. The potato volumes from the French harvest that are intended for the industry continue to grow, reaching 21% (compared to 17% in 2019). Imports are historically low, down by 78% with 750 tons (1% of the total organic offer). 

An unbalanced market for the second half of the campaign
The 2020 harvest was marked by its average quality and the presence of wireworms on the potatoes. Sales are stable for the first part of the campaign, followed by a drop from the beginning of spring (the previous year, home purchases had soared at the start of the sanitary crisis). The end of the campaign is characterized by an abundant offer compared to what the market can absorb, which causes prices to go down and makes it difficult to sell the stocks. The average prices at the shipping stage are down by nearly 60% in the second half of the 2020-21 campaign, compared to 2018-19.
