Fresas Nuevos Materiales SA (FNM), the Huelva-based breeding company, has managed to position itself as a leading player in obtaining strawberry varieties, offering a wide catalog including Primoris fnm, Rabida fnm, and Rociera fnm, three of the most appreciated varieties in the main European markets.
FNM dedicates approximately 90% of its resources to R+D+i and a large part of them have been used to strengthen the program to obtain strawberry varieties. As a result of the company's efforts, they were able to register the Rikas fnm variety, which was marketed in 2020. This early day-neutral variety has excellent fruit quality. It also has a high resistance to transport and excellent appearance. In addition, it is highly appreciated for its flavor.
At the same time, FNM is developing a specific subprogram to select varieties that are tolerant to the main diseases that affect this crop. This has allowed them to develop Marisma fnm, an extraordinarily rustic variety that is adequately adapted to the most demanding growing conditions. Marisma fnm yields fruits with outstanding firmness and postharvest life, and it is FNM's commitment to improving the sustainability of strawberry cultivation in the province of Huelva.
New raspberry variety
FNM will also market its first raspberry variety in the upcoming 2021/22 season: Noelia Fnm, which was previously known as R15.
Noelia fnm is an early and highly productive variety that aims to be a meeting point between marketers and fruit producers in the coming years. Its fruits have a healthy aspect, a conical shape, and large size. Its light red color is very attractive and differentiates it from other varieties on the market.
It maintains a high percentage of sugars and an adequate sugar/acid balance throughout the growing cycle, which gives the fruit a pleasant flavor and freshness. In addition, this variety is suitable for organic or 0 residue cultivation.
It is a reflowering variety (primocane). The correct management of planting dates will allow marketing it throughout the year. However, it is recommended for early summer plantations and autumn-winter productions in primocanes and spring in Floricanes.
