John van Laethem:

"We have grown the first Belgian ginger"

"These are extraordinary times. But extraordinary times bring about new ideas. Our company is constantly researching new varieties. We want to see what we can add to our Belgian range. That includes special herbs, edible flowers, and mini vegetables," says John van Laethem from the Belgian company, Van Laethem.

"We grow all these in our greenhouse. These new varieties include the pequino and mallow. And for the first time on the local market, real Belgian ginger. We cultivate this on our farm using zero pesticides or crop protection. Also, it's GlobalGAP certified. And we're the first to do this in Belgium."

"For us, this project confirms our company's progressive vision. We want to strengthen our market position. Ginger has always been a  company owner favorite. Hence the choice of this project," says John.

"We were able to develop a fresh, young ginger. It's delicately spiced with no large fibers. The ideal ginger, therefore, to use in exotic dishes. This also lets us market the ginger leaves fresh rather than frozen."

"This ginger's refined flavor is superior to ginger from distant countries. This way, we also reduce our ecological footprint. Something our company always heeds," explains Van Laethem.

Is this project commercially viable? "That's still very much the question. But, with this product, we're concentrating on a niche market. A short trip to our business, and you'll find what you're looking for," concludes John. Finally, he encourages people to visit their blogspot for ginger inspiration.
