The Philippine Statistics Authority reported that harvests of four major fruits were mixed in the second quarter; banana and pineapple output gains shadowed by declines for calamansi (Philippine lemon) and mangoes. The Philippines produced 2.26 million tons of bananas in the April-June period, up 1.3 percent than the 2.23 million tons seen a year earlier.
Pineapple harvests, meanwhile, totaled 744,820 tons, a 4.6-percent gain from the 712,260 tons posted in the comparable 2020 period. Calamansi production, however, plunged 7.8 percent to 13,380 tons from 14,510 tons year earlier, while mango output dipped 0.2 percent to 556,820 metric tons from 558,070 metric tons.
The Cavendish variety accounted for the bulk of second quarter banana production, taking a 52.3-percent share. The Davao region was the biggest producer with a 38.9-percent slice followed by Northern Mindanao (19 percent) and Soccsksargen (12.2 percent).
