Scully Pear sheds in Finley and Scotts Valley is a true pear growing company. Each shed employs approximately 200 workers, shipping out pears throughout North America and to parts of Central America.
Andy Scully says he’d been around the sheds since he was 6 years old. He now runs the orchards during harvest, manages the Finley shed. He makes sure there are no problems or mechanical breakdowns or too much fruit in one area. “I try to put out a fire before it starts.” He also directs the personnel in both operations, and assists in all logistical planning.
Andy said Scully Packing has 500 acres, both owned and leased. There are 20 growers in Lake County, Mendocino County and the Sacramento Delta. Seven of the 20 are Lake County growers. The Lake and Mendocino pears are mountain pears, which are the late-season pears.
“This year’s crop is estimated at 25,000 tons, which is up 25% from last year,” said Scully. “The fruit is smaller-size due to the drought and hot weather.” Scully explained that in extreme heat, the pear tree uses all its vitality to protect the tree rather than using it for the fruit.
