Piura is the main organic banana producing and exporting region in Peru with a 93% participation in the sector. Between January and the second week of August of this year, Piura exported more than 7.18 million 18.14 kg-boxes of organic bananas to 15 international markets for a value that exceeded 91 million dollars, according to data from Piura Exporta, which means the average price of a box stood at $ 12.69.
The highest peak was registered in mid-June with sales worth more than 4.3 million dollars, i.e. 47.6% higher than in the same week of the previous year Meanwhile, the most significant sales decreases were registered in the months of March, May, and the first week of June.
The main destination markets for Peruvian bananas are the Netherlands, the United States, Panama, Belgium, and South Korea. It should be noted that the volume sold to the Netherlands, the United States, and South Korea in 2021 experienced significant growth when compared to the same period of 2020.
The leading exporters to date are Agronegocios Los Angeles, Appbosa, Anpro, Pronatur, and Capebosan.
The province of Sullana, with the districts of Marcavelica, Querecotillo, and Miguel Checa, is the most important banana-producing area in the department of Piura, followed by the provinces of Morropon, Piura, and Paita.
