“Safe-D Vento 2 addresses the weather challenges that table grapes and soft fruits face”

The use of anti-rain plastic covering is very common in cultivations like table grapes, cherries and soft fruits in general. Protection from weather and management of light offers healthier plants, better quantity and quality in harvesting, possibility for earlier or later crop. But climate change has come to add more challenges, like waves of extreme heat, heavy summer rains that are followed by hi temperatures skyrocketing humidity levels or strong wind that endanger the anti-rain structures.

Daios Plastics S.A., a Greek company, has recently released a new plastic cover named Safe-D Vento 2, that faces all these challenges. "Safe-D Vento 2 derives from the standard anti-rain cover of the company with the typical lateral and central reinforcements that permit a solid placement of the film over the anti-rain structure. But the film is equipped along the whole length with holes in the center of its width that permit heat and humidity to escape," Dimitris Daios, owner of Daios Plastic explains.

Daios continues: "Hot air always tends to go higher, so it is blocked in upper level of the anti-rain structure. Having so many holes at this level, we give a way out to all this heat. Also humidity becomes less, as a natural ventilation system is created with these number of vents."

Additionally Safe-D Vento 2 system works as protective measure for the whole structure against strong winds, Daios states: "High velocity air provokes problem in the anti-rain structure as the wind is blocked under the film creating excessive pressure. But with Safe-D Vento 2 the wind finds a way out through the holes and consequently the farmer doesn’t risk its investment. Of course all these apertures in the film should not allow rain water to enter. This goal is achieved by the addition of an extra protecting cover above the holes, in a way that heat and humidity can go out but no water can come through."

Safe-D Vento 2 is a new product already tested in Daios Plastics S.A. experimental fields with extremely positive results. This year the film is being placed in all the major markets of Greece, Italy, Spain and Turkey and the first feedback is very promising. Daios Plastics S.A. is in close collaboration with all its customers listening to their views and trying always to offer the best possible solutions.
