US: H-E-B reopens tornado-battered Central Market in Dallas
H-E-B reopened its Central Market Preston Royal supermarket near North Dallas, which had been shut 20 months for rebuilding and restoration after being destroyed by a tornado. Located in the Preston Oaks shopping center, the roughly 35,000-square-foot Central Market sustained severe damage from tornados that swept through the area on October 20, 2019.

US: PCC Community Markets fights food insecurity with new meals program
Seattle food co-op PCC Community Markets introduced its new its Shared Values Meal program as part of the 15-store chain’s ongoing efforts to address food access across its Puget Sound market area. Each month, PCC shoppers will have access to a Shared Values Meal priced at $9.95 that feeds up to 4 and can be prepped and plated in under 30 minutes. The new program aligns with the co-op’s mission to ensure that good food nourishes the communities it serves, said PCC.

US: Aldi continues its multi-state expansion in June
Aldi opened 3 new stores during the month of June, pushing it past the 2,100-store mark. The recently-unveiled locations are in Charlottesville, Virginia, Montgomery, Alabama, and Fort Myers, Florida and were built to the chain’s typical footprint of 12,000 square feet. The expansion brings Aldi closer to its goals of opening about 100 new stores in the United States in 2021 and becoming the third-largest U.S. grocery retailer by store count by the end of 2022.

US: Dollar General adding produce to 10,000 stores
Dollar General said it expects to offer produce in up to 10,000 of its stores over the next several years, up from 1,300 stores currently, as it moves closer to functioning as a grocer in more of the communities where it operates. The revelation about fresh food expansion was made in conjunction with an announcement of a new partnership with Feeding America. Dollar General said it entered into an operational partnership with Feeding America and made a $1mln donation to the organization to provide access to food resources in rural and otherwise underserved communities and to proactively address food insecurity across the country.

X5 Group, a leading Russian food retailer, announced the expansion of Mnogo Lososya and the launch of its operations in St Petersburg, which has just welcomed the company's first dark kitchen outside of the Moscow metropolitan area. The 120 square meter food facility is located on Moscovsky Avenue near the city's Park Pobedy metro station.

India: Zomato wants to re-enter grocery delivery space, seeks a 9.3% stake in Grofers
Zomato has been preparing for its initial public offering (IPO) in India, but before that, the company might acquire a 9.3% stake in the online grocery delivery platform Grofers. The move will likely allow the online food ordering major to let its users' order groceries right through the app. The deal between Grofers and Zomato will also help the two better compete with rivals like Swiggy and BigBasket in the grocery ordering space online.

Turkey: Getir follows mega funding round with Blok acquisition
Turkish rapid grocery delivery startup, Getir, is set to acquire Blok, another quick commerce service. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed. Based out of Barcelona, and previously known as Huvi Technologies, Blok is active in Spain and Italy, where its biggest markets are Madrid, Barcelona and Milan.

Aldi has announced some of the latest Super 6 offers that will be coming to its stores in July, with fruit and vegetables starting from just 29p. Every fortnight, Aldi picks 6 of its fresh produce favourites to offer to shoppers at low prices, and at no extra cost to its suppliers. This month, shoppers will be able to purchase the following Super 6 items: Loose Red Peppers (29p each); Spring Onions (29p each); 4 Baking Potatoes (29p for 4 pack); Beef Tomato (39p each); Red Grapefruit (39p each); Watermelon (£1.59 each).

HEMA withdraws from the United Kingdom
HEMA wants to concentrate on its core markets and has therefore decided to close all 6 shops in the United Kingdom at the end of the summer. A decision on Spain may follow soon. The decision comes as no surprise: a few weeks ago, CEO Saskia Egas Reparaz had already indicated that she wants to focus primarily on sustainable growth in the core markets: the Benelux and France. "Maybe foreign expansion is a good idea, one day, but it is not mission one now", she said. She also immediately reintroduced Dutch as the working language at the Amsterdam headquarters.

Spain: Caprabo forecasts 25% increase in tomato sales
Grocery retailer Caprabo expects to see a 25% year-on-year growth in the sales of local tomatoes this season after facing weather related difficulties in 2019 and the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. UK: Lidl and Aldi to be 2 years late in reaching store opening targets
New research has estimated that Lidl and Aldi will be 12 to 24 months late in hitting their store opening targets. Trading overlap with their own and each other’s stores will increasingly disrupt progress as each discounter nears its target, according to retail location analysts Maximise UK. Aldi currently has about 920 UK stores, with a long-term target of 1200 by 2025, while Lidl has 860 with a target of 1000 by 2023.

Sanchez Romero was founded in 1954 as a small specialized supermarket until it was able to expand and add a dozen supermarkets in Madrid that reach more than 9,000 square meters of surface.
